smokfraqs

Eight audio-visual fragments: smokfraqs by Billy Roisz and Dieter Kovačič, a total of almost four minutes in length, can do without a comprehensive visual context or synthesization of the abstract music. Instead, it uses a sequence of miniatures which one could easily imagine as individual elements or in loops.

smokfraqs has been reduced to a pleasant result. The connection to the sound, which hums and crackles, rises and falls in intensity, is not created by fine analogies alone – compressions or rhythms which coincide with the audio elements –the moment of electronic feedback also plays a role. These visual effects provide a binding foundation for additional digital processing; each instance is separate, although similarities and variations can be found. Distorted geometric forms are used to create a type of grainy texture, or a flickering background of subdued coloration in front of which white particles dance. Frames and a drop through which finely grained strips meander are repeated into infinity.

Eight short 30-second sequences punctuated by black frames. smokfraqs, a serial work, is made compelling in part by its structural clarity and formal simplicity. (Isabella Reicher)
