Illusions & Mirrors

Cinema has truly told us many stories about illusions and mirrors. At first sight, the waves in the opening sequence of Illusions & Mirrors, breaking on the shore in white spumes of froth, might also be pure imagination. For as natural as the surf may sound on this deserted beach, as unreal the distorted images of this scenery seem to be. It might be the misty-eyed young woman in a black dress that all of a sudden appears in front of us, whose face and loose long hair are clearly perceived while a dark figure emerges from the blurred image of the dunes. But the next image quickly teaches us otherwise: For although the woman follows the mysterious figure into an empty house, our vision of the two remains refracted as if through a mirror. Is it us who might be falling victim to an illusion – and who must hope for an awakening? “This film pays tribute to black and white silent films by surrealist directors”, says Shirin Neshat. However, Illusions & Mirrors also does homage to the film by Samuel Beckett that refers to itself in its very title: a camera, moving across a house, an observer reduced to him or herself – referring to FILM.

With her recent twelve-minute short film Illusions & Mirrors, Neshat explores the world of dreams. A young woman wandering on a beach in search of a ghostly presence makes a staggering discovery.

“This film,” explains the director, “pays tribute to the black-and-white and silent films made by Surrealist filmmakers such as Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Luis Buñuel and, later, the wonderful experimental filmmaker Maya Deren. Thematically, it is a big departure for me, as it moves away from all my past socio-political subjects regarding Iran and Islam and enters a very timeless and universal story.”

Illusions & Mirrors, with singularly beautiful images mirrored in Natalie Portman´s sensitive and thoughtful performance and the dreamlike music by Johnny Azari, not only confirms the maturity of Shirin Neshat´s artistic vision, but also opens a new horizon for her oeuvre.

Feast your eyes on this dose of beautiful imagery in Black and White film. Illusions and Mirrors featuring Academy Award winning actress Natalie Portman will be showcased at Dior´s Miss Dior Exposition at the Grand Palais in November. Musician and poet Johnny Azari created the compositional landscape for the Dior commissioned 12-minute film shot by Academy Award Nominee Darius Khondji and directed by artist Shirin Neshat.

The full-length film will premiere at the Miss Dior Exposition and only be available as an art piece in the exhibition. Filmed in Neshat´s characteristic, radical, mainly black-and-white style, Illusions & Mirrors traces the somnambulistic hallucinations of a young woman, played by Natalie Portman. Illusions & Mirrors is about the futile attempt of chasing a shadow that wanders through the dunes of an empty beach. When it finally comes to an encounter in a deserted house, the young woman experiences a disturbing surprise.

Illusions & Mirrors” came to me as a completely silent film and my job was to give it ears. Shirin Neshat´s masterful images told an abstract story that I´ve felt too often in a literal way: is any of this real; who am I now, who have I been, and what will I be? The challenge of the piece was to not use music in an orthodox way, but rather write a tone poem. The mansion that Natalie Portman is lost in felt like a metaphor for one´s mind. I tried to create those auditory moments in life that makes reality quite questionable.” – Johnny Azari, composer and sound designer of Illusions & Mirrors.

Angedeutete Blicke in einen alten Spiegel (Article)

Dominik Kamalzadeh, In: DER STANDARD, 24. September 2013
