Interstate

The highway has produced the American space, created entire landscapes that are designed for joy riders. The highway is becoming a "common place" and more and more often a space for socializing and entertainment, the last refuge for privacy and "encounters" with nature.
The film was shot with a still camera rather a film camera, and the sound-track was downloaded from the internet and not recorded on location.

INTERSTATE - Der rasende Stillstand (DE)

INTERSTATE - Der rasende Stillstand

Text: Axel Fussi

INTERSTATE - the frenzy of standstill

Text by Axel Fussi

In this montage of thousands of individually taken photographs, meticulously sewn together, generating the impression of an actual film of sorts, the landscape dominates the scenery as a still-life background to eerily appearing and disappearing cars, trucks and motorcycles, with no clue to a continuity one might expect. In-built loops echo the paradoxon of movement, as described by Zenon, hinted at by way of both fragmentation and repetition that air the feeling of a viscious circle in heated rotation. The vanishing point of perspective, the pinpoint focus of modern identity, exemplified by a road ever touching and ever missing the vanishing horizon, is the epitomy of modernity’s failing attempt to progressively gain control over it’s projected constructs.

Time inherent in the geological aspect of the landscape’s space adds a totally different temporal dimension to the hastily, ghostly appearance and disappearance of the vehicles, rushing up and down the Interstate; to the sudden speed with which they emerge, seemingly out of nowhere, before fading into oblivion with equal vitesse.

In the light of the phenomenon, that our perception of the speed of an object, we are moving in, decreases with the distance to our point of reference against which it is measured, one may conclude, that against the backdrop of infinity (space) or eternity (time), there is no movement at all, but just a standstill frency.

As Paul Virillio says in 1992 (with regard to the rave scene): “...with the irregularity of the epileptic space, defined by surprise and an unpredictable variation of frequencies, it’s no longer a matter of tension or attention, but of suspension pure and simple, (by acceleration) disappearance and effective reappearance of the real, departure from duration.”
