Die letzten Bilder der Nacht
Before the introduction of 24-hour programming on Austrian state television in 1994, the last pictures (and sounds) of the night were two shots of the Austrian flag (including the federal eagle) with a dissolve, waving in the wind. The soundtrack was the national anthem. This nightly “clip,” which is Paul Divjaks film, is repeated as something else. The flag stood for something that was destined to fail because of historical changes in the media. It stood for the demarcation of borders: between night and day and between the dark ages of television history and the dawning age of permanent overexposure.
