IT’S A DANCE

Fascination, uncertainty, fear: a school event and thus a restless, out of the ordinary hormonal state. Using clips from the 1990s coming-of-age TV show My So-Called Life, Viktoria Schmid reveals the stereotypical portrayal of the adolescent quest for identity. She formally connects the anxiety of puberty with an aesthetics of imperfection: gorgeous and garish pixelation resulting from interrupted downloads decomposes the video image – sound and narration are in a state of continual (auto)-dissolution. While a group of dancing teenagers becomes lost in a digital neon cluster, a blaring Eurodance song asks what may be the decisive question: what is love?
