Dóra Maurer — Thinking in Proportions

A sheet is folded: a total of seven times, each time completed by a folding process. The resulting grid corresponds in each case to the projection format of a 16mm film, which in turn measures exactly the length of Dóra Maurer's two outstretched arms: Timing - a conceptually and visually haunting key work of structural film. The cinematographic recording apparatus and its synesthetic possibilities represent a core theme of Maurer's film work. Inter-Images 1-3 explores cinematic masking techniques, while Triolets explores perceptual boundaries via lens changes, motion sequences, and varying sound. Maurer's visually forced image and sound work also leads into abstraction. Kalah translates an ancient Arabic game into a visual piece of music; Relative Schwingungen uses recording techniques for a composition of light and movement. (ds)
