Miranda Pennell

Sun May 30, 2010, 20:00 h
Metro Kino, Wien

Miranda Pennell, originally a trained dancer, creates not only a dance in the image in her video work, but also a dance with the image - from upset situations to still moments that are able to contrast and emphasise the movement. The dancing people are never on their own - they dance for and with the camera. As a dancer, Pennell's affinity for rhythm and music is very obvious; she also succeeds in "translating" the movements she finds into a "cinematic vocabulary". In this way, she skilfully combines the rules of both art forms and knows how to use the respective possibilities in an original way.

She consciously works with cadrage: the invisible but palpable space outside the image surface always remains present. The montage and the sound level work just as precisely, pursuing in many of the videos a multifaceted - at times intentionally enigmatic - game of showing and not showing or hearing and not hearing.

In addition to numerous festival invitations (the Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen already dedicated a tribute to her in 2006), Miranda Pennell's extraordinary dance films are increasingly in demand in the art context. Miranda Pennell lives and works in London.
