"At the beginning of the 8o's, German avant-garde film experienced a blossoming. Starting in several cities and festivals, carried by artist collectives, a movement developed whose dynamics and vehemence were reminiscent of the spirit of optimism of the 6o's in the USA. Matthias Müller, the filmmaker, is to be seen against this background.
Like many of his companions, he was studying film at the Kunsthochschule at the time, but more important for the development of an independent film language that was nonetheless characteristic of the avant-garde of the 1980s was the founding of the group ALTE KINDER: they used Super-8, developed the films themselves, and produced the prints with optical printers that no longer served as an instrument of analysis, but as a means of denaturing and manipulating the images. While Matthias Müller learns to master the elementary basics of the medium, he slowly unfolds his film-language identity in various self-portraits.
