The Lord of the Frames: Kurt Kren (1929 – 1998)

16 mm or DCP, col & bw, 84 min
curated by Peter Tscherkassky and Thomas Korschil

Walls, trees, trash: Subject matter that couldn’t be more trivial. In the late 50s the Austrian filmmaker Kurt Kren started his exploration of filmic space and time by focussing on these quotidian objects, however, the way in which he depicted them was far from ordinary! Following elaborate editing scores whose bases are the single frame and repetition of sequences, he created works of formal lucidity and stunning beauty. The structure and material of film itself become protagonists and the representation of the real is secondary to the filmic construction. In this way he was the progenitor of the structural film movement in the 1970s as well as the MTV clip-aesthetic later on. (Michaela Grill)
